The truth about the island's power grid
The grid LUMA runs is unstable and old. Blackouts can last from minutes to days. That's why the size of your battery matters: riding out a 3-hour "dip" is not the same as surviving 48 hours after a storm. The key comes down to two things: how much energy the battery stores (kWh) and how much you draw from it (your critical loads per hour).

How do we calculate those hours? (so you can trust the number)
We add up a realistic blackout scenario with these critical loads running at the same time:
- Inverter fridge: ~0.1–0.2 kWh per hour (cycles on and off).
- LED lights around the house: ~0.1 kWh/h.
- Fans: ~0.1 kWh/h.
- Game console + TV: ~0.15 kWh/h.
- One (1) inverter air conditioner at 24°C: ~0.8–1.2 kWh/h (this is the one that eats the battery).
Total with A/C: ~1.3–1.7 kWh per hour. Total without A/C (essentials only): ~0.4–0.5 kWh per hour. That's why the same system lasts 3 times longer if you turn off the A/C. The local trick: use the A/C only at night to sleep, and during the day run the fridge, fans, and lights.
Practical tips to make your battery go further
- 🔋 Set a reserve for the essentials and run the A/C only at strategic hours.
- 🌡️ An inverter mini-split uses far less than an old window A/C unit.
- ➕ The systems are scalable: if you have A/C units in several rooms, you'll probably need 2 or more battery modules.
- ☀️ With solar panels, the battery recharges during the day throughout the blackout — the backup becomes almost unlimited as long as there's sun.
So, what size do I need?
It depends on your bill and your real loads. A family with a single mini-split and a fridge does fine with one Powerwall 3. A large house with several A/C units will probably need a Fortress eVault or several Enphase modules. Guessing gets expensive — better to calculate it with your real usage.
